Townlec Auto Electrical
University & hospital precinct

Auto electrical diagnostics, Douglas.

Douglas covers the university and hospital precinct. When a vehicle is expected to keep going, we would rather find the actual fault than sell a part that was never the problem.

How to reach us

Ring us with the fault and we'll book you in

Why Douglas is different

Auto electrical work for Douglas.

Diagnose first, quote second

On an older car the difference between a small fix and a big one is usually diagnosis. We isolate the fault and tell you what it is before anything gets replaced.

Older wiring, honestly assessed

Perished looms, corroded earths and previous repairs done badly are common on higher-kilometre cars. We will tell you plainly what is worth repairing and what is throwing money at a vehicle.

Diagnosis as a job on its own

Sometimes the question is what is actually wrong, before deciding whether to spend anything — particularly on a car you are already thinking of replacing. You get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Worth knowing

How the work gets booked

Ring us with the symptom rather than the diagnosis — what it is doing, when it started, and whether anything electrical has been added or repaired before. That is usually enough to tell whether you are looking at a battery, a charging fault or something further into the loom, and it decides how much time to set aside. Battery testing and fitting is walk-in; anything that needs diagnostic time gets booked, so a technician has the vehicle for as long as the fault takes rather than half as long.

On the ground

Douglas in our words.

Not everyone is looking for the most expensive fix. Some just want to know what is actually wrong, whether that is a battery at the end of its life or something further up the charging system. Finding that out properly is the job.

FAQ

Douglas questions.

Is it worth repairing the wiring on an older car?+
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. A perished section is worth repairing. A loom that has been hacked about by three previous owners often is not, and we would rather say so than take your money.
Can I pay for diagnosis only?+
Yes. Knowing what is actually wrong before deciding whether to fix it is worth paying for, particularly on a car you are thinking of replacing. It is a legitimate job on its own.
My car has an intermittent fault nobody can find. Can you help?+
Yes. Intermittent faults are usually corroded earths, chafed wiring or a connector that only fails warm — findable with the right approach, rather than by replacing parts until it stops.
Are you a mobile auto electrician?+
The workshop is where nearly everything gets done, and it is where the full tool kit lives. On-site work is for fleet and commercial accounts, and for plant and machinery that genuinely cannot be moved. It is worked out on the phone rather than booked off a website — we are a small crew and the calendar fills up, so ring us, tell us the job, and we will give you an honest answer on whether it suits a visit or whether the vehicle is better off here.
My car won't start and I can't drive it in. What are my options?+
Ring us first and tell us what it is doing. If a jump start gets it going, bring it in on that start so the battery and charging system can both be tested. If it will not start at all, it can be towed to the workshop. Try not to replace the battery on a guess, because if the fault is somewhere else the car still will not start.
